![]() Red Nose Day brings humour to Vienna Clowns and comics and plenty of red noses will populate Vienna city centre today Saturday September the 20th to celebrate the city's 11th Red Nose Day. The event, themed around music, is a fund-raising project associated with the British charity Comic Relief and has been imitated in many countries since its inception in 1988. Saturday's day of laughter and high jinx will bring together some hundred "clown doctors" from central and western Europe who specialise in using "humour therapy". "Music is international, because music connects and because funny music is music for the soul," said a Red Nose Day spokesperson. Profits from Saturday's benefit will go towards developing outreach programmes for children’s hospitals, as well as senior citizen centres and rehabilitation facilities throughout Austria. Plenty on offer for the public, including appearances by Adi Hirschal, Nadja Maleh and all -girl band Rosa , from 1pm to 5.30pm. You're invited to visit our Clown Doctors site ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

His jail mates will include teenage cannibal killer Robert Ackermann whose last victim was also a sex pervert. Ackerman, who was 19 at the time, munched on the brains of Austrian-born Josef Schweiger, 49, for two days before the body was found by a cleaner at a hostel in Vienna. One warder at the St Pölten jail where Fritzl is currently held said: "People in here for anything involving abusing children always get a hard time from the other inmates. They used to bang on his cell and shout ‘Satan - come out and play’. Now they bang on his cell and shout Ackerman is going to eat your brains." Fritzl's trial is set to take place in February after Court officials have been given the psychiatric report which was the last piece of evidence they had been waiting for. The report by Doctor Adelheid Kastner concludes that Fritzl was sane and fully responsible for his actions when he imprisoned his daughter for 24 years and raped her repeatedly, forcing her to have seven children underground. The conclusion means he will be tried in a regular court. But a psychiatric report also recommends that if convicted he is locked up in a high security hospital for the psychologically disturbed. In Austria there is only one such place, the high security mental asylum at Goellersdorf where Austria's cannibal killer is also incarcerated. Staff at the institution are also unhappy about learning that Fritzl will end up there if, as is certain to be the case, he is convicted. Spokesman Johann Winkelbauer said: "From the end of the year our budget is set to be cut massively and we are unlikely to lose 15 psychiatrists and face other cutbacks." He warned it was already difficult to guarantee the safety and well-being of those inside and that further cuts would make it almost impossible. Fritzl is hoping he will not be jailed for more than 10 years -- the maximum he can face for rape in Austria -- and is still entertaining ideas that he might eventually be released. But the thought of spending that time with mental patients instead of in a regular jail has left him terrified. He has already spent more than a year in jail for a previous rape conviction and has also settled into a routine in the jail in St Pölten where he's been since his arrest in April. Incest dad Joseph Fritzl used to get called Satan by his mother and has admitted he went to Africa for sex sessions with local girls in Ghana. In a psychologist's report, details of which were published today in Austrian media, Fritzl said: "She didn't just used to beat me, she swore at me all the time and called me Satan and criminal. She told me that she only got pregnant to prove to my dad that she wasn't infertile and that she had never wanted me. She said I was good for nothing." He added that he had been in Ghana for 18 months in 1963 - four years after his first conviction for exposing himself in a local park and three years before he carried out a rape in his hometown for which he was later jailed. He said: "I had various short flings with women in Ghana, nothing serious. I paid either money or gave presents, but I was really cautious because I was worried about sexually transmitted diseases. I always chose nice girls - no prostitutes - for that reason." He also rejected claims that he had physically abused any members of his family either with beatings or other acts of violence. He said: "They are all saying that now because they have been manipulated. The fact is I was a very loving father and husband." He added that the proof in his eyes that he had made the right decision to raise his cellar family had been the fact that Elisabeth's children were far more loving to him than the children he had with Rosemarie -- namely Elisabeth’s brothers and sisters. To prove he was a loving father he told a psychiatrist that he had even taken Easter eggs into the cellar and hidden them around the dungeon for the children to find in a twisted version of the traditional Easter egg hunt. And he had also taken Elisabeth's three children that were allowed to live in freedom back to see her for visits so that she could see they were getting on well and being looked after. He said: "I only did that all the time they could not speak, as soon as they started to be able to speak the visits had to stop." And as well as buying the aquarium for them he claimed he had also bought them a budgie at some stage, but that the bird had sickened and died quickly in the cellar where the family had to constantly battle against stale air and mould on the walls. Fritzl had seven children with his wife Rosemarie and seven children with Elizabeth during the 24 years she was imprisoned under ground - one of whom died and was burned by Fritzl in an incinerator. |

Vienna auction house nearly hits all time record Vienna auction-house Dorotheum has reported its results for 2008 are the second-best in its long history. The house’s turnover of 108 million Euros as of 16 December is the second-highest in history, lower only than turnover in anniversary year 2007, when it became 300 years old. The highlights of this year’s auctions were 19th-century paintings. Friedrich von Amerling’s "Girl with a Straw Hat" went to the Liechtenstein Museum for 1.502 million Euros, and Giovanni Boldini’s portrait of actress Alice Regnault fetched 398,000 Euros. The auction of old masters, usually the house’s most-important source of revenue, held no surprises but produced good results. A Willem Kalf still-life brought in 467,300 Euros, Girolamo Macchiettis’ "Madonna with Child and the Boy Johannes" 398,300 Euros. The auction of famous people’s memorabilia also proved lucrative for the Dorotheum. Items from the estate of opera diva Elisaabeth Schwarzkopf brought in 160,600 Euros, and actress Romy Schneider’s charm bracelet went under the hammer for 29,600 Euros. Dream house lottery postponed The sale of the dream house on the shore of Carinthia’s Worther See by an internet lottery may take longer than originally planned, according to owner Traude Daniel. Daniel said the auction would certainly not take place before the end of the year. "The website will remain closed until we have processed all the data," she said, adding that the date of the auction would be announced on the website in two weeks. Daniel and her husband put their house up for sale via an online lottery at a price of just 99 Euros per ticket after they failed to find a buyer by more traditional means. Thousands of people from around the world have signed up for ticket purchases. The Internet site - www.hausverlosung.at - had to close down registration prematurely over the weekend after some 16,000 people had expressed interest in the house. "We have to wait and see now how many people actually make payments," Daniel said on Tuesday. A total of 9,999 tickets were up for sale -- putting the price of the house at just under one million Euros – and, as soon as they were sold, the lottery would begin, she added. If fewer than 9,999 tickets are sold for the house and the 1,408-square-metre (0.35-acre) piece of land it stands on near Klagenfurt in southern Carinthia, registration may re-open. The lottery, which is being overseen by a notary who is handling payments and potential reimbursements, was to have run until 5 May 2009. If all tickets have not been sold by that date, purchasers of tickets will get their money back, according to the website. Salzburg hit man Janko eyed by Ajax Austrian international Marc Janko has reportedly attracted the interest of Amsterdam outfit Ajax with his string of outstanding performances for Red Bull Salzburg. The 25-year-old striker has already scored 30 league goals in 20 appearances for the table toppers of the Austrian league. According to "Salzburger Nachrichten", Ajax are ready to table a 10 million Euros offer for the highly rated attacker, whose situation is also being closely monitored by several Bundesliga sides. However, Red Bull Salzburg are reluctant to let go of their star player and it remains to be seen if they allow Janko to leave before the end of the season even if a huge offer comes in. Janko, who recently won the Austrian footballer of the year award, only needs twelve more league goals in the remaining fifteen matches to erase the legendary Hans Krankl from the record books. The former Rapid Vienna striker scored 41 league goals in the 1977/1978 season. Austria has first chess player banned for doping An Austrian woman has become the world’s first chess player to be banned for doping. When officials from the country’s anti-doping agency turned up at amateur chess player Monika Galamfalvy’s Vienna flat she thought someone was playing a practical joke on her and slammed the door in their faces. But now she has been told in a letter that she refused to undergo a doping test and has therefore been given a ban for an indefinite period. Conmen taking the pee with urine trick Austrian police have warned of Xmas con men claiming to be Red Cross workers collecting urine samples to trick pensioners into opening their doors. In the latest incident police in Bad Ischl, Upper Austria, said two women rang the doorbell at the home of a 79-year-old woman but were chased off because a real Red Cross worker was already at the house. The duo showed a bottle with a red cross painted on it, asking the pensioner for a urine sample as part of a standard health test that was being carried out door to door. Austrian Vatican Xmas tree to be turned into toys This year’s Christmas tree at the Vatican which has been donated by Austria will be turned into toys for needy children, it has been revealed. The 33-metre-high tree which came from Gutenstein im Piestingtal in Lower Austria was erected outside the Vatican’s basilica of St Peter last Saturday. Now Vatican officials announced that all the wood from the 120-year-old tree will be recycled to make toys for deprived children and garden furniture such as benches for schools. The decision to recycle the wood from the tree was the Vatican's latest effort to go green. Last month, it activated a large system of solar panels on the roof of its audience hall and announced an ambitious plan that could one day make it an alternative energy exporter. |

Incest victim Elisabeth Fritzl has been offered a new refuge at the clinic where she and her family recovered from their lives as dungeon prisoners. Elisabeth, 42, and her six children are expected to move back in to the clinic to escape massive public interest when her father Josef's trial begins on 16 March. The family spent eight months in a lodge at the clinic near Amstetten, Lower Austria, following Fritzl's arrest last April before moving out, presumably to a secret address near Elisabeth's elder sister Ulrike’s home in Bad Goisern, Upper Austria. Now the Landeskliniken-Holding of Lower Austria, the body managing the northern province’s hospitals, have approved plans for Elisabeth and her children to take refuge from the expected media frenzy in the clinic. Victims lawyer Christoph Herbst confirmed on Friday having received such an offer from the Landeskliniken-Holding. Austrian daily "Kurier" reports a "tight security network" will be prepared to protect the family for the few days the trial is expected to take. Prosecutors of the court in Sankt Polten, where Josef Fritzl will face justice, confirmed yesterday (Thurs) that the trial will begin on 16 March. Franz Cutka, deputy head of the court admitted the initial plan was to make the announcement today (Fri). Cutka however was forced to confirm newspaper reports one day earlier, blaming a "leak" in his team. Josef Fritzl will face charges of murder, rape, slavery, incest, imprisonment and abuse in the four day trial. If convicted, he is likely to spend the rest of his life in prison and will die behind bars. Fritzl, 74, imprisoned Elisabeth for 24 years in a dungeon under the family home in Amstetten and used her as his personal sex slave while he raped her more than 3,000 times, say prosecutors. She bore seven children by her evil dad - one of whom he is accused of killing by failing to get medical help when the boy was born with breathing difficulties. An eighth child was miscarried. Thirty police officers and prison warders will be on duty to keep order during the trial for what is regarded as the most shocking crime in the country's post-war history Burgenland man jailed for raping sister A court in Burgenland capital Eisenstadt sentenced a 20-year-old Burgenland man to three years in prison on Tuesday for raping his sister. The man violently raped his sister and engaged in other sexual abuse of her in incidents dating back to 2002. The eight-person jury’s guilty verdict was unanimous. The man partially admitted his guilt, owning up to incest but denying he had used violence against his sister. The case may further tarnish Austria’s international reputation in the run-up to the March trial of Josef Fritzl, 73. His incest case has received massive international media attention. Two weekend ski deaths in Salzburg ![]() The death toll of Austrian ski slopes continued over the weekend with both an Upper Austrian woman and a German man losing their lives to collisions in Salzburg province. The woman, 47, from Goldworth, died yesterdsay (Sun) after colliding with a British man, 27 at a ski area near Zell am See over the weekend despite the fact she was wearing a helmet. The Brit tourist was taken to nearby Schwarzach hospital with minor injuries. A breathalyser test showed the man had not been drinking. The German man, 56, died on Saturday in hospital of head injuries he had suffered during a collision earlier in the week with another German man at the Saalbach-Hinterglemm ski area in the Pinzgau. An autopsy has been ordered. A number of skiers have also been seriously injured in Salzburg. Two Austrian men collided on Saturday at a ski area near Zauchensee in the Pongau. One man, 40, had severe facial injuries, and the second man, 25, suffered torn ligaments. A German woman who was sledding on Saturday at the Lend ski area in the Pinzgau ran into a snow-grooming machine and sustained serious injury. Serious skiing accidents have occurred in other provinces, as well. Three skiers were hurt in accidents in Styria yesterday (Sun). A Polish youth, 17, snowboarding on the Galsterbergalm fell and became partially paralysed after seriously injuring his back. He was taken by helicopter to a hospital. A Czech man, 21, snowboarding near Stuhleck fell while jumping over an obstacle and seriously hurt his head. He had been wearing a helmet. He was also taken by helicopter to a hospital. An Austrian man, 28, from Judenburg fell while leaving a prepared piste on the Hohe Ranach and hit his head against its hard surface. He was unconscious for some time before begin taken by helicopter to Judenburg hospital. Caritas calls for a war on poverty ![]() Roman Catholic charity Caritas is calling for a war on poverty in Austria. The charity issued the call for a package of government assistance for "the socially weak" after the social ministry presented its annual social report Caritas also welcomed Social Democrat (SPO) Social Minister Rudolf Hundstorfer’s plan to introduce minimum social insurance for those in need in at least eight provinces by autumn, 2009. Vienna Caritas Director Michael Landau said the plan for minimum social insurance was a matter of "political will" rather than of "political ability." Greens’ social spokesman Karl Ollinger added the government’s strategy to prevent poverty had proven a failure. He also called for a government package of assistance for those in need. Alliance for the Future of Austria (BZO) family spokeswoman Ursula Haubner said it was "high time" for more government measures to help families in need. Half of Austrians back EU´s light bulb aims ![]() A bare majority of Austrians are in favour of the EU’s plans to end use of the traditional electric-light bulb, according to a recent poll. Fifty per cent said they supported the plans, and 41 per cent opposed them in a recent poll. Austrians aged 14-39 years of age gave the plans more support than older people. The new energy-savings light bulb is already in use in many Austrian households. Two-thirds of them are using both traditional and energy-saving bulbs, and 15 per cent are using only the latter. Only 20 per cent of households have yet to use energy-saving bulbs. The Psychonomics-Institut recently polled 2,000 Austrians about the EU’s plans to replace traditional bulbs with the new energy-savings variety. |

Incest trial jury will stay at secret place The jury who will sit in judgement against incest monster Josef Fritzl are to be sequestered under armed guard. Frank Cutka, deputy head of the court of Sankt Poelten where Fritzl will go on trial from next Monday, told newspaper "Kurier" the court ditched initial plans to locate the jury – eight people and four substitutes – at the nearby army base. Cutka admitted the court realised it would be "unbearable" for the jury to stay there because facilities are primitive. It has now been decided that the jury members will stay at a secret place from where they will be transported to the court everyday. The jury will consist of six male and six female people. It is unclear whether all of the eleven hours of interviews with Elisabeth Fritzl will be played to the jury while public and journalists are barred from the court. Her testimony is so harrowing authorities have decided to let them listen to just two hours of testimony each day. Elisabeth’s brother Harald will also give testimony to the court but it is unclear if this will be in person or also via video. The court has already handed in a request to air traffic control authority "Austro Control" to declare the airspace over the courtroom a no-go zone for the duration of the trial to avoid news helicopters. MACO to lay off 40 workers and put rest into part-time work ![]() Salzburg window- and door-fittings manufacturer MACO is planning to lay off as many as 40 of its 700 workers and to put the remainder into part-time work. Firm management made the announcement , adding a drastic drop in demand in the Russian Federation and Ukraine since the beginning of the year had made such moves necessary. Management added the workers’ council had approved them. A MACO spokesman said: "We do not expect demand to rise any time soon." He added the measures just decided upon would enable the firm to survive for the time being. MACO is a subsidiary of Mayer & Co, which claims to have 2,000 employees worldwide and to be the third-largest manufacturer of window and door fittings in the market. Strabag-led consortium gets Hungarian rail contract A consortium led by Austrian construction firm Strabag SE has won a contract to modernise a section of railway between Tarnok and Szekesfehervar in Hungary. Strabag announced the contract was worth 183 million Euros, of which it would receive 37.5 million. The consortium will renovate the rails and the overhead cables and install security equipment and telecommunications technology on the set stretch of track. The work should be completed by December 2012. Strabag has often been in the news lately because of the many new contracts it has obtained and the acquisitions it has made. The European Commission (EC) yesterday approved Strabag’s acquisition of the Hamburg firm Hermann Wellmann Tiefbau. Strabag will acquire a 50-per-cent interest in Wellmann through its German subsidiary Josef Möbius. Wellmann, which was restructured by the German firm Kemna Bau at the end of 2007, is active in the underground construction, primary production and construction-materials recycling sectors. Strabag is interested in other acquisitions, as well, despite the recession’s negative impact on the construction industry. Austrian construction firm Porr and Strabag are competing in separate consortiums for a juicy Romanian motorway-construction contract. The contract, said to be worth between 2.0 and 2.3 billion Euros, is for construction of a 58-kilometre-long segment of the Bucharest-Brasov motorway between Comarnec and Brasov. It includes a concession for operation of the motorway for 30 years. Three of the original 12 consortiums interested in the work have submitted binding offers. One consortium includes Strabag SE, Israeli infrastructure firm Housing & Construction Holding Co Ltd., the French firm Egis Projects and Eurovia Construct International. A second consortium includes Porr and the German construction and services firm Berger Bilfinger. A third consortium is led by French construction firm Vinci. The Romanian government is examining the binding offers. Construction of the motorway segment is expected to take four-to-five years. The Hungarian cartel authority has approved Strabag’s acquisition of Mexican cement firm Cemex’s Hungarian subsidiary. Strabag had announced a few weeks ago it had signed a contract for Hungarian Cemex Hungaria Epitöanyagok Kft. in July 2008. Strabag is awaiting the Austrian cartel authority’s approval for its acquisition of Cemex Austria AG. If the deal is approved, Strabag will pay 310 million Euros for Cemex’s two subsidiaries. Strabag chief Hans Peter Haselsteiner said: "I am assuming there won’t be any problem with the Austrian cartel authority." Haselsteiner added acquisition of Hungarian Cemex would make his firm market leader in cement production and in the stone and gravel sectors in Hungary. Hungarian Cemex, which has 40 cement mixing facilities in Hungary, is the fourth-biggest cement producer in that country. The firm has eight stone and gravel quarries with reserves of 60 million tonnes. It had turnover of 61 million Euros in 2007. Cemex Austria has 45 cement-mixing facilities and 30 stone and gravel quarries with reserves of 156 million tonnes. The firm had turnover of 196 million Euros in 2007. Credit crunch Austria had over 2mn cards last year ![]() Austrians had 2.45 million credit cards in 2008, an increase of 3.4 per cent or 85,708 cards over the previous year. The Austrian National Bank (OeNB) made the announcement , adding Austrians had engaged in 67.22 million credit-card transactions last year, an increase of 7.1 per cent or 4.47 million over 2007. OeNB said the average credit-card transaction had amounted to 110 Euros in 2008, compared to 109 in 2007, and total transactions had amounted to 7.4 billion Euros, an increase of 8.7 per cent or 590 million Euros over the previous year. Austrians used their credit cards to make 4.53 million withdrawals of cash totalling 885 million Euros in 2008, OeNB said, whereas they made 4.06 million withdrawals of cash totalling 810 million Euros in 2007. The average withdrawal amounted to 195 Euros in 2008 versus 199 Euros in 2007, the bank noted. The figures show Austrians are continuing to join the rest of the world in using credit cards rather than cash for their purchases. Witness search in OeNB worker knifing The Vienna police are looking for witnesses of the murder of Austrian National Bank (OeNB) employee Julia R. late Wednesday evening. An unknown assailant stabbed Julia R., 41, twice in the back with a kitchen knife as she was walking home at about 10:50 pm in Vienna’s Hernals district. An autopsy has revealed she died of internal injuries caused by the stabbings. A female passer-by heard the Russian woman scream and soon came upon her body, lying face down in the middle of the sidewalk at Dornbacher Straße 41. Julia R. was still alive but was no longer able to speak. She died 10 minutes after an ambulance arrived on the scene. The passer-by, who had called police, did not see the stabbings or notice anyone fleeing from the scene. The victim, who had been visiting a friend in Vienna’s Leopoldstadt district, had taken the U2 underground to Schottentor and then taken a line 43 tram to the intersection of Dornbacher Straße and Vollbadstraße in Hernals. The police say they are conducting a comprehensive investigation of the murder but are unwilling to provide any information about it. The police are asking people who may have witnessed the murder or who have relevant information about it to call them "موريتز",الدب البنى النمساوى يصحو و يعود للحياة بعد أن كانت الصحافة قد إهتمت به و تتبعت أخباره لامتداد غفوة بياته الشتوى إلى أربعة أشهر كاملة Brown bear Moritz is on the prowl again Brown bear Moritz has awakened from hibernation in Upper Austria after a four-month-long nap, longer than usual for the nine-year-old omnivore. Moritz’ tracks were spotted in the snow between Bad Aussee and Hallstatt on Monday this week. The bear is estimated to have lost a third of its weight in hibernation but should still have plenty of reserves. Moritz’s first priority will be to find enough to eat and then to find a mate. Moritz may participate in a bear summit in Styria at the end of March that will include females, but Styrian officials will have to approve his presence in the province. There is some opposition to it since some farmers in the Dachstein area have claimed Moritz has killed and eaten a number of their sheep, but bear experts maintain there is no evidence that he has. The sheep may simply have wandered into inaccessible areas and fallen - they said. Every sixth Austrian woman finds a partner online ![]() The internet is acting as cupid for woman in Austria after it was found that every sixth woman in the country has found a partner online. Forty-one per cent of single women say they greatly value the serious nature of online contact offers by men, according to a recent poll. Twenty-three per cent appreciate the flexibility in terms of time from online dating, while 19 per cent value the large number of possible choices that an online search provides. Online-partner agency www.parship.at recently polled 667 single Austrian women for the data. Raich has whiff of World Cup glory ![]() Austrian skier Benjamin Raich has a chance to win the overall World Cup in Alpine-skiing this year. With seven events to go, five skiers are within 110 points of each other. The five are Croat Ivica Kostelic (837 points), Raich (835 points), Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Grange (777 points), Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal (751 points) and Swiss Didier Cuche (727 points). The remaining events in Kvitfjell, Norway and Aare, Sweden include three downhills, two Super-Gs, one giant slalom and one slalom. Svindal and Cuche tend to do better in the speed events (downhill, Super-G) than the other three skiers and so may be the favourites to win the overall cup. Neither has won a single point in a slalom this season. An analysis conducted by ORF online based on the average number of points each of the five skiers has won in the four disciplines so far this season concludes Svindal should win the overall cup by a margin of seven points over Raich. As ORF notes, however, mathematical analyses don’t always tell the tale, and luck, good or bad, always plays some role. It is possible that the winner of the overall cup will end up with fewer than 1,000 points since no skier has been dominant this season. That would be highly unusual, for the winner has had an average of 1,265 points annually since Austrian Hermann Maier won the overall cup with 2,000 points in 2000. Raich, 31, was the overall cup winner in the 2005/2006 season. |

One in five Austrians want a ´strong leader´ study reveals that six per cent of Austrians would welcome a military dictatorship. The analysis, conducted by political analyst Thomas Hofer, also found that half of Austrians are unhappy with democracy. One in five people interviewed expressed a desire for a "strong leader," while 50 per cent said they would like foreigners kicked out of the country if the situation in the labour market worsened. Another result of the research is that general interest in politics has decreased over the past ten years. No court prosecutions for neo-Nazi event Upper Austrian authorities shave said no charges are to be brought over an alleged neo-Nazi event last month in Gmunden district. Michael Tischlinger, the head of the Upper Austrian office for the protection of the constitution and the fight against terrorism, said investigators had found no evidence that laws were broken at the party at a pub. But he said: "We have learned who is in the neo-Nazi network." Police had been called to a birthday party at a pub after the owner feared it was a far-right gathering. Tischlinger said most of the guests had left by the time police had arrived on the scene and the few who were still present had been too drunk to be questioned. An investigation later found the German band playing at the party were a rock, rather than a neo-Nazi, group, but the man celebrating his birthday and others there were linked to the far right. Meanwhile police recently tracked down three teenagers in connection with the destruction of a memorial to Nazi euthanasia victims in the town of Vocklamarkt. Authorities in Upper Austria said three suspects, all seventeen, were accused of vandalising the memorial erected by the province’s Comrades Association on the night between 22 and 23 May. Alois Lissl, chief of the Upper Austrian security directorate, said the youngsters argued they had been unaware of the meaning of the plaque resting on triple steel pillars. It listed the names of three community residents who had died at the Nazis’ euthanasia facility at nearby Hartheim Palace. The monument was erected three years ago. The incident came just two weeks after a gang of six teenagers had attacked concentration camp survivors in Ebensee, 50 kilometres from Vocklamarkt. Three of the six boys in question fired plastic bullets at the Holocaust survivors while others shouted Nazi slogans at them. وزيرة الداخلية و السياسية البارزة بحزب الشعب تعد بأن النمسا ستكون من أكثر دول العالم أمناً و أقلها فى معدلات الجريمة فى ظل الإجراءات الأمنية الجديدة Fekter announces criminal asylum applicant crackdown People’s Party Interior Minister Maria Fekter has announced a crack down on criminal asylum applicants. Fekter said the new measures would help make Austria "one of the safest countries in the world." Under the proposed measures there would be faster expulsion proceedings against applicants who have been charged with crimes by the public prosecutor and broader use of preventive detention for applicants facing expulsion from Austria. Fekter, who said the number of applicants in preventive detention had risen from 5,400 last year to 8,700, said a new detention centre, probably to be located in Leoben, Styria, would be used for the accommodation of more applicants in preventive detention. The minister added x-ray procedures would be used to determine the age of applicants who claimed to be minors and therefore exempt from deportation. She added applicants in fake marriages with Austrians would also face expulsion. In the past, only Austrians involved in such marriages have been liable to punishment. Fekter said she wanted the measures to become law by 1 January 2010. The minister added the measures had been consulted with coalition partner Social Democrats before being publicly presented. The party's General Secretary Fritz Kaltenegger said the Party supported Fekter’s plans, adding that opposition parties the "blue-orange agitators," [a reference to right-wing parties the Freedom Party and the Alliance for the Future of Austria ] and the "Green dreamers" [a reference to the Green Party] "didn’t have a clue" and were out of contact with reality on the issue. Constitutional experts Bernd Christian Funk and Heinz Mayer warned that Fekter’s measures, if they became law, might be unconstitutional and violate the Geneva Refugee Convention. An upsurge in crime for which foreigners have been partially responsible has become a political issue in Austria. إستطلاع للرأى بأحد أشهر صحف النمسا يظهر أن أكثر من 80% من المشاركين به لا يستغربون تنامى معاداة السامية و صعود نجم التيار اليمينى المتطرف و نشاط المجموعات النازية بالنمسا Poll result distracts from Austria´s biggest political problem poll asking readers what they think about an alleged rise in racially-motivated crime in Austria has brought an "earth-shattering" result. The poll conducted by Austrian Times, which ended today (Weds), found eight in ten readers (80.3 per cent) are "not surprised" by the soaring number of felonies connected with far-right ideology. The overwhelming majority of readers participating in the poll agree with the claim that a "xenophobic mindset has always had a place in the Austrian mentality." Only 11 per cent are of the opinion that the situation is the same everywhere these days while a low number of readers – 3.4 per cent - doubt the statistics and think that the number of reported crimes does not tally with the number of incidents that have actually happened. Meanwhile 5.3 per cent think that the soaring number of racist crimes "does not make sense" since "Austrians are social and open-minded, not racist." But this poll result should not really shock anyone taking into the account the high number of such incidents that recently occurred in the country. A group of teenagers attacked Holocaust survivors during remembrance events at a former concentration camp in the province of Upper Austria in May. Only days later, it was revealed that a group of Viennese students had been sent home early from a trip to the former camp in Auschwitz, Poland, after teachers failed to silence some who continuously claimed "All Jews should simply be gassed" – in front of a survivor of the camp who guided the group through the venue. Last week, a Salzburg teenager turned himself in after smearing swastikas and Nazi slogans on various public objects in the city. Cops in Upper Austria meanwhile discovered a memorial to Nazi euthanasia victims had been destroyed by three boys. Political controversy hit the headlines recently as well. Martin Graf, the third president of the Austrian Parliament, came under fire for calling the leader of the Jewish Community in Austria the "godfather of anti-fascist left-wing terrorism". Graf, a member of the right-wing Freedom Party and right-wing extremist student fraternity Olympia also accused Ariel Muzicant, the leader of Austria’s Jewish community, of "creating a climate of brutality" in the country. Graf has been attacked by all political opponents but also various NGOs, but refused to apologise or step down. He claimed having only used "democratic measures" to defend himself and fellow Party members. Graf’s statements came after Muzicant compared the Party's general secretary Herbert Kickl with Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels. The issue also put the governing Social Democrats and the People’s Party pressure as they united in voting for Graf as third president of the parliament. New book on involvement of Austrians in the Third Reich A new book examines the claim that Austrians were more-ruthless Nazis than Germans. "Unser Hitler – Die Osterreicher und ihr Landsmann" (Our Hitler – Austrians and their Compatriot) by Martin Haidinger and Günther Steinbach investigates the often-expressed claim that Austrians were the more-radical murderers in the Third Reich headed by Austrian-born Hitler. The book, which has so far been published only in German, tries to determine whether allegations are true that around 40 per cent of concentration camp wardens in all countries annexed to the Third Reich were Austrians. It also checks on how much truth the outdated opinion that Austria was the first victim of the Nazi’s campaign contains. The authors manage to provide fantastic new insights by interviewing contemporary witnesses who have never spoken out about their experiences before. Alma Mahler play returns to Vienna next month A play about the life and loves of Alma Mahler returns to Vienna next month. Joshua Sobol’s play "Alma - A Show Biz ans Ende" was premiered at the Vienna Festival in 1996 before touring the world. Over the past few years, Austrian actor Paulus Manker has managed to have the play performed in Berlin, Venice, Los Angeles and Lisbon. "Alma - A Show Biz ans Ende" tells the story of Alma Mahler, who was known as the most- beautiful girl in Vienna in the late 19th century. Mahler, who was born in 1879, started an affair with artist and notorious lady-killer Gustav Klimt at the age of 17. Many other famous men of the city’s high society like composer Gustav Mahler and painter Oskar Kokoschka were to follow. The play, which will be presented at the former main post office in Vienna at Borseplatz 1 between 3 and 31 July, fascinates viewers with its multiple, simultaneously acted-out plots. It is up to the individual audience which string they want to follow when the actors move from one gloomy room to the other. This time around, the park in front of the abandoned building will also be used for scenes. After the play leaves Vienna again, it will be staged at a museum in Jerusalem from 3 October. Social Democratic Education Minister Claudia Schmied and Vienna Mayor Michael Haupl will attend the Jerusalem premiere of the play. Manker has expressed gratitude to Ariel Muzicant, the president of the Austrian Jewish Community, for his help in arranging for the play to be staged in Jerusalem. MQ 'beer war' protests planned More than a thousand people are expected to demonstrate this weekend in a dispute over drinking at the Museumsquartier (MQ) complex in Vienna. MQ bosses want to stop people brining their own drinks with them to the popular site, which has a large yard, after complaining about the many beer cans left lying around. Following two "flash mob" gatherings with the motto "Bring your own beer" earlier this week when hundreds gathered at the site to raise their cans to each other for five minutes, protesters said yesterday (Weds) around 1,300 people are expected to attend a demonstration this Saturday. They said they also wanted "bicycle pushers", folk music choirs and naked cyclists to protest over plans to stop cycling and playing music at the site. The protestors have also spoken out over "aggressive" security staff. MQ manager Wolfgang Waldner said police and residents are in support of the planned new rules. He added the new rules were entirely legal as the MQ is private property and the public are only granted access to it and the use of its facilities. Vienna gets the world´s smallest radio station It may be the smallest radio station in the world but at least that guarantees the personal touch. From now on visitors to the Paolos restaurant in Vienna’s Westbahnhof underground station can tune into owner Alexander Wacker's very own radio station on 107,8 MHz. It may not have the range of conventional radio station - not really extending much beyond the walls of the restaurant - but there is a full selection from the menu as well as this week's special offers of Caffè Latte, Strawberry Muffin and Chili Ciabatta. Anybody with a conventional radio such as that found on a mobile phone can tune in to the menu and other tips and the service has been particularly popular with blind customers. Paolo’s founder Alexander Wacker said: "It was actually a blind woman who visited the restaurant that made me realise the challenges she had to face during every day out and I wanted to do something to help. "We have our own FM-Transmitter, which generates the radio signal, And this is now legal thanks to a recent change in the law. The only requirement is to keep the strength of the signal low which is why radio reception is only possible within a distance of a few meters. "I hope that this technology will be evaluated for a broader use, since it is very easy to understand, it is really cheap, an fm-transmitter costs approximately 35 Euros, and it works reliably. In my opinion Info points for blind and visually handicapped people could be easily set up in public places and shops."
